Expedition in Path of Exile 2 can feel slow when you’re dropping charge after charge and trying to line up every remnant by hand. The Big Boom setup changes that rhythm completely. Instead of careful little chains, you build around one huge blast, clear the encounter fast, and hope the screen pays you back. For players chasing PoE 2 Currency, logbooks, Verisium, and rare drops, it’s one of those strategies that quickly becomes hard to ignore.
Why the Big Boom setup works
The whole trick starts with the Atlas passive Refined Formula. It gives Expedition explosives a massive 150% increased radius and 100% increased placement range, but it cuts you down to a single explosive. That sounds like a drawback until you see it in action. One charge can tag a large chunk of the Expedition area, pulling multiple remnants into the same detonation. You don’t waste time walking around, adjusting placements, or building a perfect route. You slam the explosive down, check the danger mods, and get ready for a messy fight.
Remnants, runes, and the real payout
The best part comes from Verisium Remnants and the way they interact with runes. Normally, you’d build bonuses step by step as each explosive goes off. With Big Boom, several Verisium Remnants can affect each other at the same time. That means more runes get pushed into the encounter at once, and the last waves can become loaded with value. Players usually look for remnants with seven to nine rune slots, because the scaling starts to feel very noticeable there. Time Rune is especially nasty in a good way, since slain monsters can come back at higher rarity. Add more monster rarity, modifier transfer on death, and rare respawns, and you’ve got the kind of fight where loot starts spilling everywhere.

Map setup matters more than people think
You’ll get much better results if the map is prepared properly. Tier 15 Waystones are the usual target, ideally with six modifiers that push monster rarity, pack strength, or monster effectiveness. Tablets help a lot too. Irradiated Tablets, Overseer Tablets, or any tablet that improves item rarity can turn an average Expedition into something worth talking about. On the Atlas Tree, Evolutionary Pressure is a strong pickup because it rewards you for running juiced maps. Disengaged Safeties also fits nicely, since irradiated areas stack well with the same kind of high-risk, high-reward mapping style.
Don’t brick your expensive logbooks
There’s one mistake that catches people out, and it’s painful. Refined Formula also affects Grand Expeditions inside logbooks. That’s bad news, because logbooks are built around careful multi-explosive routing. You want to uncover caves, ruins, reward chests, and special encounters, not waste the whole layout with one oversized blast. Before running Uncharted Waters, remove the single-explosive passive. If you’re farming hard and trading gains into PoE 2 Currency for sale markets or upgrades, protecting each logbook matters just as much as finding one in the first place.
